Erling Haaland pulled off what may come to be a career-defining performance for Norway in the World Cup on Sunday evening, when the plucky Scandinavian national knocked international heavyweights Brazil out of the tournament. Despite the match being a fiercely contested duel, with both teams creating numerous chances and Brazil missing a penalty in the first half, it was the clinical finishing of the Manchester City striker that ultimately proved pivotal. Haaland broke the deadlock in the 79th minute with a well-placed header, then put the tie to bed on the cusp of full-time with a wonderfully placed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner. Despite a late penalty from Neymar, Brazil were ultimately powerless to stop Haaland & Co.

The result now means that Norway have progressed beyond the first knock-out round of a World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history, with their historic run in this year’s tournament now pitting them against none other than England in the quarter-finals. However, for Haaland, it’ll be a familiar foe, considering the fact that the towering striker was not only born in England but will be coming up against several defenders that he’s well-versed in tussling with in the Premier League each week. The match will also decide whether it will be Norway’s star striker or England darling, Harry Kane, who will continue their pursuit of this year’s Golden Boot at the tournament, with Haaland sitting on seven goals in four games and Kane sitting on six in five games.
However, aside from the football on the pitch, football fans around the world will also be taking a keen interest in how this World Cup will come to define Haaland’s legacy. The Norway star entered the competition as the joint most valuable player in the world, with a market value of €200 million. That means the Man City star is level with Spain winger Lamine Yamal and just €20m more valuable than France striker Kylian Mbappé. Could Haaland’s goals continue to lead Norway to more unprecedented success at the World Cup and, by extension, push his market value above the other contenders for the title of the world’s best player?
