Goalscorers often hog most of the plaudits in football and sometimes rightly so. The feeling of scoring a goal is a moment to savour for players, teams and fans alike – even if it has been somewhat watered down by the introduction of VAR. For strikers, winning any golden boot is a much sought-after accolade, and one that is a great indication of them being at the top level in their field. Winning that award in any of the major leagues is an incredible achievement, but there is one goalscoring accolade in club football that tops them all – the European Golden Boot.

Kylian Mbappé won the prestigious trophy last season scoring 31 goals in LaLiga and therefore accumulating 72 points. All goals scored in Europe’s top-five leagues (Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga & Ligue 1) are multiplied by two as those divisions have a coefficient of two. Goals in the leagues ranked between sixth and 22nd are multiplied by 1.5, whilst in all leagues below that they are multiplied by just one.

Incredibly in the 2011/12 season, the great Lionel Messi managed to accrue 100 points, scoring 50 league goals. In total, the Argentine won the European Golden Boot six times. As we approach the 2025/26 campaign’s run-in, this season looks as though it will be an extraordinary race for the European Golden Boot, with many prolific goalscorers all still in with a chance.

Who will win the 2025/26 European Golden Boot?

Currently leading the way is Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, who won the award in the 2023/24 season. The Englishman has scored 24 goals in the Bundesliga, meaning he has 48 points. He is followed closely by Real Madrid superstar and holder of the award Mbappé, who has 23 LaLiga goals and 46 points. Manchester City goal-machine Erling Haaland, the 2022/23 winner, is third with 22 Premier League goals and therefore 44 points. It’s perfectly set up with all of the last three season’s winners going head-to-head with just two goals between them.

There is then a big drop off to Brentford striker Igor Thiago in fourth with 17 goals and 34 points. He has already broken the record for the most Premier League goals scored in a season by a Brazilian player. In fifth is another surprise name in Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi with 15 goals and 30 points. The Liga Portugal pair of Sporting’s Luis Suárez and Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis share sixth, each having scored 19 goals and accumulated 28.5 points. Remarkably, Darko Lemajic of FC RFS takes eighth having scored 28 goals in the Latvian top-flight. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez (28 points) and Feyenoord’s Ayase Ueda (27 points) complete the top 10.
