Dayot Upamecano has ended speculation over his future by penning a contract extension with Bayern Munich. The French international’s deal was due to expire this summer but he’s signed on until 2030. The 27-year-old has been an integral part of Bayern’s defence since joining from fellow Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for €42.5 million.
The centre-back has made 28 appearances for Bayern this season with Vincent Kompany’s side firmly on track to win another Bundesliga title. Upamecano will be crucial to Bayern’s prospects in the Champions League and he was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer. It was felt at various stages that Los Blancos would acquire another elite player on a free transfer but Upamecano has committed his future to Bayern.
Speaking after his extension, Upamecano said: “I’m really happy to be staying at Bayern and continuing to play in this team. We’ve got a great team and a great coach. We’ve got big goals together. In life, it’s always about mentality. I give my all for my teammates, in every training session, want to keep a clean sheet in every game and want to win as many titles as possible with Bayern.”
