44 club goals sets bar

It’s been a disappointing campaign so far for Real Madrid but Kylian Mbappé is almost single-handedly keeping them in contention for major honours. Xabi Alonso’s ill-fated tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu lasted less than eight-months with the Spaniard unable to handle a dressing-room full of egos. Mbappé unquestionably fits that description but unlike the vast majority of his teammates, the 27-year-old has lived up to his reputation and carried Madrid’s prospects on his shoulders.
The Frenchman enjoyed an excellent debut campaign at Los Blancos from an individual perspective, with his 44 goals breaking the record for most goals in a debut season at Real Madrid – held by Iván Zamorano, not Cristiano Ronaldo. And Mbappé has continued scoring at an incredible rate this season with 38 goals in just 31 games in the famous white shirt and he’s firmly on track to break his own goalscoring record.
Kylian Mbappé’s best goalscoring seasons for club
Mbappé’s scoring rate for Real Madrid this season of 1.28 goals per 90 minutes is easily the best of his career and he will break his record tally – if he avoids injury. The striker has twice scored 44 club goals in a single season, with PSG in 2023/24 and his debut season in Spain. As the graphic below illustrates, Mbappé’s exploits in his final season in France ranks top as it took him 11 fewer games to reach the 44 goal milestone.
Based on his current scoring rate, Mbappé would require just five more games to eclipse his current record, but it’s unlikely that he will continue to find the net so freely. But Madrid still have 15 LaLiga games remaining this season, plus their Champions League exploits so it’s a matter of when, not if, Mbappé achieves his best goalscoring club season in his career.
