The self-titled ‘Special One’ is back at the biggest club in the world after Real Madrid announced José Mourinho as their new head coach. The Portuguese boss returns to the Santiago Bernabeu 13 years after departing in 2013 after being the preferred choice of all-powerful president Florentino Perez. Real Madrid’s official club statement read: “The Board of Directors of Real Madrid CF, meeting today Thursday, June 11, and chaired by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as first team coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029. Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day the preseason begins.”
Mourinho has been entrusted to repair a fragmented dressing room and re-establish Madrid as the dominant side in European football. It’s unquestionably a box-office appointment, which will either end in glory or disaster and Mourinho hasn’t won a league title in 11 years. The 63-year-old completed an invincible season with Benfica but failed to win Liga Portugal and preventing Barcelona winning a third consecutive LaLiga title will be high on his list of objectives. Mourinho won one LaLiga crown during his previous three year stint, but who were his record signings during that period? Let’s find out!
Jose Mourinho’s record signings at Real Madrid
In total, Mourinho spent a relatively modest €187.5 million after spending fees on 13 signings, while Michael Essien and Hamit Altintop joined on loan. The legendary Portuguese manager’s record signing was Luka Modrić with the Croatian midfielder arriving for €35m from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012. Modric proved to be an inspired signing as he helped Madrid win six Champions League titles during an incredibly decorated spell.
As the graphic above illustrates, Ángel Di María ranks second after arriving from Benfica of €33m in 2010 and he was another good signing. Fábio Coentrão also joined from Benfica in the following summer and he completes the top three at €30m. Analysing the top ten list, Mourinho made some brilliant value for money signings during his previous spell, acquiring Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira and Raphael Varane for just €43m combined.
