Debate often rages as to who are the best teams in Europe right now, and even half way through the campaign it truly is hard to tell. With the various nuances in the new Champions League league phase structure, even that doesn’t clear too much up. Whilst it must of course be remembered that the standards are different in each league each season, to try and help determine which top-five league sides are looking the best right now, here at Transfermarkt we have compiled a top-five league table. We will be revealing the top 20 teams from across the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 each week. To make it fair on the German and French top-flights which have less teams and therefore less games, the table has been based on points-per-game (ppg).

The top-five league table

Currently leading the way with a remarkable 2.73ppg and +44 goal difference after just 15 games are Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. Behind them in second with an impressive 2.58ppg are LaLiga’s Barcelona. They are followed by their El Clásico rivals Real Madrid in third, who have 2.37ppg. In fourth are Ligue 1’s surprise leaders Lens with 2.35ppg. Premier League leaders Arsenal giants are now fifth with a 2.33ppg record, with Serie A table-toppers Inter Milan in sixth with 2.33ppg but a slightly inferior goal difference than the Gunners.

Champions League holders Paris-Saint-Germain (2.29ppg & +22 goal difference), Villarreal (2.24ppg & +18 goal difference) AC Milan (2.17ppg & +15 goal difference), and Borussia Dortmund (2.13ppg & +14 goal difference), complete the top 10. Manchester City and Aston Villa are the only other Premier League teams in the top 20 – the Sky Blues rank 12th, whilst the Villains rank 13th. Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, three LaLiga teams make the top eight.
