Whilst the World Cup usually turns our attention away from club football towards footballing nations, some clubs will be particularly enjoying how their players are progressing at the summer’s festival of football. Performing well at a World Cup can not only affect a player’s value, but also have confidence riding high ahead of the new club season.

Spanish giants Real Madrid endured a tough, trophy-less 2025/26 campaign, but their attackers have been on fire this summer in North America. Collectively Los Blancos stars have now scored 19 goals at the 2026 World Cup – breaking the all-time record for the most goals scored by players from one club at a single World Cup. Kylian Mbappé has scored eight for France, whilst Jude Bellingham has scored six for England. Vinicius Junior scored four for Brazil and Arda Güler scored one for Türkiye.

Real Madrid break World Cup record

Real Madrid have now broken a record that had stood (but been equalled) since 1954. Back then 18 goals were scored by players from Hungarian side Budapest Honvéd – all of which were for Hungary. Sándor Kocsis scored 11 goals, Ferenc Puskás scored four and Zoltán Czibor scored three. Bayern Munich equalled that tally in 2014 when Germany won the World Cup with seven players scoring for five different nations. Paris Saint-Germain also hit 18 goals in the 2022 World Cup, with Mbappé (8) and Lionel Messi (7) contributing the lion share.

Stade Reims contributed 17 goals in the 1954 World Cup, as did Barcelona in the 1994 tournament. Uruguayan outfit Peñarol saw 15 goals scored by their players at the 1954 World Cup. They also contributed 14 goals as a club in the 1950 tournament. As did Brazilian side Vasco Da Gama in the 1950 World Cup and Inter Milan in the 2002 tournament.
