Brace against Senegal

Erling Haaland can’t stop scoring for Norway. On Monday, he scored a brace against Senegal and has now scored four goals in just two World Cup matches. He has also now an unbelievable 59 goals in just 52 games for his country. That is an unbelievable 1.13 goals per game. A glance at the Transfermarkt database also shows that Haaland has now scored a goal every 72 minutes for Norway.
That’s an unbelievable record for the Norwegian forward. His goals have also been crucial for his country. Against Senegal, his second goal, which made it 3-1 in the 58th minute, would turn out to be the winner as Ismaila Sarr added a late goal to halve the score and make it 3-2. The late goal means that, even though Norway are now guaranteed passage to the round of 32, they still have to beat France outright on matchday 3 to win Group I.

It will be a tantalizing fixture between Norway and France on June 26 at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. After all, France’s superstar Kylian Mbappé scored a brace earlier today in his country’s 3-0 victory over Iraq. The brace means he has now scored 60 goals in 100 games. It is incredible to think that Haaland could reach that milestone in just 53 games.

Record breaker: Can anyone stop Erling Haaland?
With Norway now poised to play at least two more fixtures, it will be interesting to see whether Haaland could be a serious candidate for the Golden Boot at this tournament. His four goals mean he is currently second, together with Mbappé, behind Argentina’s Lionel Messi. Messi, who broke Miroslav Klose’s record and became the all-time leading goalscorer at the World Cup earlier today, has already scored five goals at the tournament. Winning the Golden Boot would just be the latest milestone for Norway’s top goalscorer.

Haaland, at just 25, is already 26 goals ahead of second-placed Jørgen Juve on Norway’s all-time goalscoring chart. At his current scoring rate, he will likely set a record for the ages for Norway’s national team. In fact, the way Haaland has been scoring, any record appears to be in reach. Well, almost any record, Haaland’s World Cup career might have started just a bit too late for him to seriously challenge Messi or Mbappé for the all-time World Cup record.
