Two-year deal

Rúben Amorim’s reputation in England is very low. No manager has had a worst points-per-game record as Manchester United manager in the Premier League era than Amorim’s 1.43, but the Portuguese boss has now been offered the opportunity to begin rebuilding his reputation at an Italian giant. According to reports, the 41 year old is set to be appointed as the new AC Milan manager on a two-year deal with an option of a further year.
This comes after the San Siro side parted ways with Massimiliano Allegri this summer after missing out on Champions League football last term. At Old Trafford, Amorim’s stubbornness to continue playing a back three, even against poorer opponents, or on one particular occasion against Everton at home when the Toffees had 10 men, earned him plenty of criticism. The fact Man Utd have done so well under Michael Carrick since Amorim left has further damaged his standing in the English game.
Can Rúben Amorim rebuild reputation at AC Milan?
Early on last season, there were some smalls signs of improvements under Amorim, but he made some very strange decisions that backfired. He completely omitted talented English midfielder Kobbie Mainoo – who has since flourished again under Carrick – and played Bruno Fernandes deeper in midfield – where he could be less effective in the final third. Amorim is obviously a talented manager, as proved by his time at Sporting, but he looked completely out of his depth in the Premier League at times.
Nevertheless, perhaps in Italy, where he his team may have a bit more time on the ball and a back three system may feel more natural, he can be a success once again. His time at Old Trafford was a disaster, but it is an extremely highly-pressured job, and whilst AC Milan is a huge club, there will probably be slightly less expectation than there was in Manchester. Serie A is also more of a defensive league, which may suit Amorim’s system more. When he left Sporting, Amorim was one of the most sought-after managers in the game, but his time at Man Utd damaged his standing. Time to try and rebuild it at the San Siro.
