6 crucial games on final day

Arsenal have been crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years, but there is still plenty to play for elsewhere on the final day of the season. The Gunners will celebrate lifting the trophy for the first time since 2003/04 when the ‘Invincibles’ clinched the title without losing a single game, with their title celebrations kicking off at Selhurst Park as they face Crystal Palace.
Elsewhere, there are huge ramifications awaiting in six of the 10 games on the 38th and final matchday of the Premier League season. Places in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League are still to be decided, while one of Tottenham and West Ham will be relegated to the EFL Championship, joining Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers. To save you the job of working out all of the permutations involved, Transfermarkt has you covered on the final day of the Premier League season…
Premier League European permutations
Aston Villa
Current: 4th
Possible: 4th or 5th
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have already secured Champions League football, and they can go one further by confirming fourth place if they avoid defeat at Manchester City. The trip to the Etihad comes just days after their Europa League triumph in Istanbul and, if they lose and Liverpool win, they will drop to fifth. If Villa finish fourth, then both sixth and seventh would qualify for the Europa League. But if Villa finish fifth, sixth will qualify for the Champions League and seventh for the Europa League.
Liverpool
Current: 5th
Possible: 4th-6th
Due to their superior goal difference, Liverpool can climb above Villa into fourth place if they defeat Brentford and Villa lose against Man City. The Reds only need a point at home to Brentford to confirm their place in the Champions League. If they lose, they can only drop out of the top five if Bournemouth also win against Nottingham Forest while overturning a six-goal swing in goal difference.
Bournemouth
Current: 6th
Possible: 5th-7th
Bournemouth have already confirmed a spot in Europe next season. The only matter yet to be decided is if that will be the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League. If Aston Villa lose against Man City and Liverpool beat Brentford, Bournemouth can qualify for the Champions League by avoiding defeat at Forest, or if Brighton fail to beat Manchester United. There is also the extremely unlikely possibility of an end-of-season playoff to decide the final Champions League place if Liverpool to lose 1-0 to Brentford and Bournemouth win 5-0 at Forest, as all metrics would be equal.
Brighton
Current: 7th
Possible: 6th-9th
Brighton can leapfrog Bournemouth into sixth place if they beat Manchester United at the Amex Stadium and the Cherries lose at Nottingham Forest. In this scenario, Brighton would also require Villa to lose against Man City and Liverpool beat Brentford, in order to qualify for the Champions League. Victory for Brighton would ensure that they qualify for the Europa League at the very least, but a defeat risks the possibility of dropping down to ninth place and missing out on Europe.
Chelsea
Current: 8th
Possible: 7th-11th
Chelsea have a superior goal difference over Brentford, so if they beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and Brighton fail to beat Man United, they will almost certainly finish seventh. If Brighton lose by two goals and Brentford fail to win at Liverpool, Chelsea can also overtake the Seagulls with a draw. A defeat for the Blues would mean Sunderland jump above them, ending their hopes of qualifying for any European competition next season.
Brentford
Current: 9th
Possible: 7th-12th
Brentford are level on points with Chelsea but with a +3 goal difference to the Blues’ +7. For that reason, the Bees must better Chelsea’s result against Sunderland to secure a top-eight finish. However, they can qualify for the Europa League if they defeat Liverpool at Anfield and both Chelsea and Brighton fail to win.
Sunderland
Current: 10th
Possible: 7th-12th
Sunderland’s task is fairly simple: beat Chelsea. If the Black Cats manage to win their final game and Brentford do not beat Liverpool at Anfield, Regis Le Bris’ men qualify for Europe. If Brighton also lose against United, they will finish seventh.
Premier League relegation permutations
Tottenham
Current: 17th
Possible: 17th or 18th
West Ham
Current: 18th
Possible: 17th or 18th
A straightforward task for Tottenham and Roberto De Zerbi. If they beat Everton, they survive relegation and West Ham are relegated to the EFL Championship. Even a draw would all but guarantee their safety, as West Ham would need to beat Leeds by 12 goals or more to eliminate the gap in goal difference.
West Ham know they have to beat Leeds to have any chance of avoiding relegation. If Spurs lose against Everton and they beat Leeds, the Hammers will stay up by a single point.
