7 transfers over €100m

The Premier League has played host to some of the most talented players in football history, with Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Erling Haaland just a few names to arrive in big-money transfers. But the trend with marquee signings attached to exorbitant transfer fees has certainly been mixed in recent years – and particularly for players who cost over €100 million.
Only seven imports have commanded such a fee, and it’s fair to say many have struggled under the weight of expectation. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz both found life tough to cope with at Liverpool in their early months, while Chelsea pair Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez took some time to adapt to the pressure on their shoulders. Manchester City’s record signing Jack Grealish is little more than an afterthought now after being loaned out to Everton.

So, what does the future hold for prospective €100 million signings coming to the Premier League in the future? Transfermarkt looks at four signings this summer who could break that barrier.
Yan Diomande
Liverpool have reportedly identified RB Leizpig starlet Yan Diomande as the long-term successor to Mohamed Salah, who is leaving Anfield in the summer after nine years at Anfield. Diomande has made a huge impression in the Bundesliga since his €20 million move from Leganes last summer, scoring 12 goals and creating eight assists. The Ivory Coast international, 19, has been courted by Europe’s top clubs, and while Bayern Munich are said to hold an interest, the Bavarian giants are unlikely to shell out such a huge fee unless Michael Olise leaves.
Leipzig won’t let him leave on the cheap, however, and are insistent on his €100 million price tag. Whether Liverpool will pull the trigger on such an expensive deal, having already spent €480.2 million last summer, remains to be seen. But he has already demonstrated that he could be a potential star for the future, with his market value rising €73.5 million from just €1.5 million in the space of just 10 months. If Liverpool bring him to Merseyside, that value could continue to skyrocket.
Morgan Rogers
Morgan Rogers only penned a new contract with Aston Villa a few months ago to tie him to the club until June 2031. But the lure of playing Champions League football and a lucrative transfer fee may make this a marriage of convenience for Rogers and Villa. Unai Emery’s side are far from guaranteed a place in next season’s competition after their 1-0 defeat to Fulham and Europe’s elite are circling.
What’s more, Chelsea have shown strong interest in recruiting the 23-year-old and the connection with his fellow City academy graduates Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap at Stamford Bridge cannot be ignored. Senior recruitment chief Joe Shields is a huge admirer of Rogers and Chelsea have a tendency to splash out in the transfer market. But with Arsenal, Bayern and PSG all able to offer guaranteed Champions League football, there is no indication yet where he will go. With a market value of €80 million, any deal will be expensive in its makeup.
Julián Alvarez
Less than two years after leaving Manchester City for Atlético Madrid for €75 million, Alvarez has been strongly linked with a move back to England, with Arsenal and Chelsea in the conversation to sign him. The Argentina international boasts a fine record since heading to LaLiga, with 48 goals in 104 appearances, and is one of the finest No. 10s around. It’s fair to say City have missed his craft in the central areas and his partnership with Erling Haaland certainly helped the Norwegian find his best form in City colours.
At 26, it would represent a large outlay to prise him away from Atletico with the risk of not getting the same return. Also, Atletico may be reluctant to sell with Antoine Griezmann joining Orlando City in the summer. But a €100 million bid could be enough to tempt them into cashing in and if he stars at the World Cup, few would argue against Alvarez’s signing representing a shrewd piece of business. Barcelona pose a threat to the Premier League duo, however, as they look for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Anthony Gordon
The expectation is that Newcastle will cash in on Anthony Gordon this summer if the winger requests a move away from St James’ park, but might they be advised to wait until the latter stages of the transfer window? The 25-year-old’s form in the Premier League has been unspectacular, but he has left his mark in the Champions League where he scored 10 goals in 12 games this season – a record figure for a Newcastle player.
Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Liverpool are all in the running to sign the England international, who could earn a starting spot under Thomas Tuchel at the World Cup in June. If he impresses, Newcastle could look to spark a bidding war which may increase their chances of receiving a bid far beyond his €60 million market value.
