Even in a market driven by big-money transfers and record-breaking fees, there’s still a special intrigue in the players who cost nothing at all. The latest AprilTransfermarkt market value update has refreshed the list of the most valuable free agents in world football, highlighting stars who could still be picked up on a free transfer at this stage of the season. From seasoned internationals still capable of changing a game, to younger prospects waiting for the right project, the current pool of free agents still makes an interesting read with plenty of nostalgic names cropping up. Here’s a look at the most valuable free agents in the world right now.

The most valuable free agents in the world

Leading the way as the current most valuable star looking for a new club is Uruguayan Felipe Carballo, who left Brazilian club Grémio in January. The 29-year-old has a market value of €3.5 million. Second place goes to Moroccan Amine Bassi; the 28-year-old left MLS side Houston Dynamo in January and is worth €2.5m. Next up is former Liverpool and Barcelona playmaker, Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian is a free agent after leaving native club Vasco da Gama in February. The 33 year old has a current market value of €2.5m.

Slovenian Andrés Vombergar (€2m) and American Brooks Lennon (€1.8m) complete the top five. Former Rangers and Liverpool player Ryan Kent is sixth, having left Seattle Sounders at the start of the year and boasting a market value of €1.8m. José Martínez (€1.8m), Jonathan Rodríguez (€1,5m), and Zymer Bytyqi (€1.2m) take seventh, eighth and ninth respectively. Completing the top 10 is English midfielder Dele Alli (€1m), who left Italian side Como almost a year ago. He once had a market value as high as €100m when he was at Tottenham.
