10-2 aggregate win over Atalanta
©IMAGO
It may have been pretty much a dead rubber when Bayern Munich hosted Atalanta for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16. After all, Bayern had smashed the Serie A side 6-1 one week ago in Bergamo. Not among the scorers was Harry Kane, the England captain, who got a rare night off, watching from the sidelines as his Bayern side dismantled the Italians.

As a result, Kane, who had scored 48 goals in 65 games, had to wait to hit the 50-goal milestone for another week. Tonight, Kane quickly scored a brace in Bayern’s 4-1 second leg over Atalanta. First, Kane scored from the spot (25’), and in the second half, he completed his brace with a lovely finish (54’), becoming the first Englishman to hit 50 goals in the Champions League.
Only two players got to the benchmark faster than Kane. While Erling Haaland needed just 49 games to get to 50 goals, Ruud van Nistelrooy just beat out Kane for second spot, scoring his 50 goals in 62 games. Perhaps Kane would have gotten there faster if he had joined Bayern Munich earlier in his career. Since joining the Bundesliga giants, Kane has scored 29 goals in just 34 Champions League games, averaging 0.85 goals per match.

10-2 on aggregate – Where does Bayern’s victory over Atalanta rank in history?
It speaks to Bayern’s professionalism that, despite a congested schedule and Club World Cup duty last summer, they took the second leg against Atalanta seriously. Only in the last few minutes, after Vincent Kompany brought on teenager Filip Pavić, who became the youngest player in Bayern’s Champions League history, did Bayern take the foot off the pedal, allowing Atalanta to score an away goal. Still, it is the second-biggest aggregate win in Bayern’s history, behind only their 12-1 (5-0; 7-1) aggregate win over Sporting CP in March 2009.
