Newcastle’s Champions League dream was ended in slightly embarrassing style at the Camp Nou this Wednesday. The Magpies actually played well in the first half and were slightly unfortunate to be 3-2 behind at the break, after a late Lamine Yamal penalty, along with goals from Raphinha and Marc Bernal, cancelled out an Anthony Elanga brace. However, after the interval, Eddie Howe’s team fell apart.

Within 16 minutes the score was 6-2, and it didn’t end there, as Hansi Flick’s side eventually ran out 7-2 winners. Newcastle became just the second English team to concede seven goals in a Champions League match, after Tottenham were beaten 7-2 by Bayern Munich in the group stages in North London in 2019. It was also one of the highest scoring matches in Champions League history, but which games beat it?

Highest scoring Champions League games

The highest scoring match in the history of the Champions League since the reformat in 1992/93 was when Borussia Dortmund beat Legia Warsaw 8-4 in the group stages in 2016. There have then been two games with 11 goals: Bayern Munich’s 9-2 victory against Dinamo Zagreb in 2024 and Monaco’s 8-3 demolition of Deportivo La Coruna all the way back in 2003. There was then 10 goals in Bayern’s famous 8-2 victory over Barcelona themselves in 2020. Newcastle’s defeat now ranks joint fifth with a further eight games also having seen nine goals.
