Bayern Munich highlighted why they are one of the favourites to win the Champions League season by demolishing Atalanta 6-1 in the first leg of their last 16 clash. The performance and result away from home was even more impressive as Bayern rested several key players, including talisman Harry Kane. Vincent Kompany’s side are reaching the final steps of their procession towards yet another Bundesliga title and their complete dominance of German football is unlikely to end anytime soon.

The biggest challenge for Bayern has always been replicating their domestic success on the European stage but they have an excellent chance of lifting the most coveted trophy in club football. Only Real Madrid and AC Milan have been crowned champions of Europe more than Bayern Munich but the Bavarian giants are in a league of their own in one impressive goalscoring statistic.

Which club has scored 5+ goals the most in Champions League history?

Only Real Madrid (1,182) have scored more goals in the history of the European Cup/Champions League than Bayern Munich (884) but the Bundesliga champions lead the way in terms of scoring 5+ goals in the most games. The emphatic triumph over Atalanta was remarkably the 31st time that Bayern have scored five or more goals in a single game in the competition.

As the graphic above illustrates, that is four times more than second-placed Real Madrid, who have managed the feat 27 times. Barcelona ranks third with 26, which is nine more times than PSG in fourth place. Five English Premier League clubs feature in the top ten – Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea – while Serie A is the only top five league not represented.
