England’s troubled pair?

Why Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka have lost a combined €40m in market value this season

Two of England’s brightest talents have seen their market values fall sharply in the latest Premier League market value update. Bukayo Saka dropped to €120m and Cole Palmer to €110m, a combined loss of €40m since the start of the season for the pair. Both remain among the most valuable players in the world, but a dip in form and mounting expectations have forced a reassessment of where they stand. The numbers tell part of the story. Saka has managed just four non-penalty Premier League goals this season, Palmer three. For players operating at that level of valuation, that isn’t enough.

“When you’re at that very high end of €120-130 million, you’ve got to be performing numbers as well as just having overall good performances,” said Transfermarkt’s Ben Littlemore. Saka remains Arsenal’s most dangerous attacker on most nights, and his creativity hasn’t entirely deserted him. But something has gone missing in front of goal. “He used to be quite reliable in front of goal, and now he’s taking too many touches, and a lot of his shots are wild and shooting well over the bar,” Littlemore noted – a stark contrast to the composed, clinical Saka of previous seasons.

Palmer’s situation carries a similar thread but with added complications. Injuries have disrupted his rhythm at Chelsea, and two managerial changes have done little to help his consistency. “Just when he shows signs that you think he’s gonna get back to his game, he drops right off again,” Littlemore said. “In that 23/24 season, every time Palmer got the ball, something happened and you don’t quite feel that anymore with him.”

Neither player can hide behind inexperience as an excuse. At 23 and 24, both are now central figures for their clubs. Saka has captained Arsenal this season, while Palmer is considered one of Chelsea’s established stars amid constant squad turnover. The bar has been raised, and right now, neither is clearing it consistently. That said, the door remains open. As Littlemore put it: “They still remain two of the most valuable players in the world — we just needed to reflect the dip in form this season for both of them.”
