Thomas Tuchel set to sign England contract extension - his managerial record compared to other bosses

England manager Thomas Tuchel is set to extend his contract as Three Lions boss through until Euro 2028. The German took the job in January 2025 on a deal that ran until this summer’s World Cup, with much speculation that he may leave his post after the tournament if England fail to win it at the time. However, the latest reports suggest that he views leading England into a home Euros as an unprecedented opportunity and is poised to commit to two further years to the national team.

The 2028 European Championship finals are being hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. Tuchel has so far managed 10 England games, of which two have been international friendlies and eight have been World Cup qualifiers. The former Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager has lost just one match with the Three Lions – a shock 3-1 home defeat to Senegal at the City Ground in Nottingham back in June.

Other than that, the German’s record has been pretty much perfect, and England go into next summer’s World Cup, hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico, as one of the favourites to win the tournament. It’s been an extremely solid start for the 52-year-old, but the biggest tests are yet to come. So, how does Tuchel’s record so far compare to other England managers when it comes to points-per-game (ppg)?

The only manager with a higher ppg record than Tuchel with England is Sam Allardyce, which is a bit of a falsehood anyway. ‘Big Sam’ took charge of just one match – a win against Slovenia – before he was relieved of his duties after being caught up in a scandal. So, Allardyce has a 3.00 ppg record, but take that with a pinch of salt. Tuchel is next, and basically first, with his record of 2.70ppg from his 10 games in charge. This is a great start for the German, but once again it must be considered how small the sample size is. Next on the list is Lee Carsley – another very short tenure – he took charge of six games as interim boss and boasted a 2.50ppg record.

In fourth is the first manager who has managed over 10 games and a timely reminder that having a good ppg record, mainly accumulated from qualifiers and friendlies, is not necessarily an indication of a successful England boss. Fabio Capello had a record of 2.19ppg from 422 games, but failed miserably with the Three Lions’ ‘Golden generation’. Gareth Southgate completes the top five, with an impressive 2.08ppg from as many as 102 games in charge – he also took England to two European Championship finals.
