Virgil van Dijk once again led by example for Liverpool at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday evening, scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 win against Sunderland with a header from a corner. Liverpool needed a good result after falling behind in the race for the top five, and their Dutch centre-half stepped up again. In doing so, van Dijk scored his 27th Premier League goal, but where does that rank him on the all-time list of centre-backs with the most goals in the Premier League? Let’s find out.
All-time top goalscoring centre-backs in the Premier League
Leading the way is Chelsea legend John Terry. The former English international centre-back scored as many as 41 Premier League goals in 492 games. In second place is a name from the 1990s in former Leicester centre-back Ian Marshall, who scored an impressive 33 goals in 157 matches. In third is former England and Chelsea centre-half Gary Cahill, who scored 28 times in 294 appearances. Van Dijk finds himself fourth on the list now with 27 goals in 327 Premier League games. He will have Cahill in his sights.

Frenchman William Gallas completes the top five with 25 goals in 321 Premier League games. Joleon Lescott is sixth with 24 goals in 288 games, with Matt Elliott taking seventh with 22 goals in 199 matches. Laurent Koscielny (22 goals), Sami Hyypiä (22 goals) and Craig Dawson (21 goals) complete the top 10.
