Bayen Munich on fire

There was significant scepticism when Bayern Munich decided to appoint Vincent Kompany but it’s proven to be an excellent decision. The Bavarian club have enjoyed a near monopoly of German football for over a decade but after failing to win the Bundesliga for the only time in the last 13 seasons, Thomas Tuchel was sacked and replaced with Kompany in 2024. Eyebrows were raised as Kompany had just overseen Burnley’s relegation from the English Premier League and his single-minded commitment to his attacking approach was widely criticised.
But it was that philosophy that made the former Manchester City captain extremely appealing to Bayern and it’s been a hugely successful appointment. Kompany led Bayern to the Bundesliga title last season and they are destined to win it again, whilst playing a fantastic brand of football – Bayern average 3.94 goals per game in the league. Bayern’s superiority was evidenced, once again, in their 8-1 rout of Wolfsburg at the weekend in Kompany’s 50th league game in charge. Using Transfermarkt’s unrivalled database, we’ve analysed how his points tally from those games compares to some elite managers.
Best points tally after 50 league games
Analysing the data from the top five leagues across history, Kompany ranks second for highest points totals across the first 50 league games at a single club. The 39-year-old obviously managed with Burnley in the Premier League, but we’ve focused on records at one specific club as opposed to first 50 games in the top five leagues across multiple clubs. And Kompany impressively ranks joint-second with 126 points across his first 50 league games with Bayern.
As the graphic above illustrates, only Pep Guardiola has collected more points across his first 50 games at a top five league club, racking up 132 points also at Bayern. Another former Bayern boss, Hansi Flick, features in the top fop five and there’s also three ex- Real Madrid managers in the top ten – Miguel Munoz, Zinédine Zidane and José Mourinho. The ‘special one’ is the manager to feature twice, also ranking third for his incredible start at Chelsea, amassing the same amount of points as Kompany.
